Over the past several years, Rotary International and the United Nations have developed and maintained a close relationship. But many are not aware of the historical background, which included 49 Rotarians who participated at the original charter meetings for creation of the UN.

Because of these roots and the fact that both organizations share a joint objective to improve world understanding and peace, Rotary International has official status at this important institution. To share knowledge and enhance this partnership, Rotarians and United Nations leaders often hold joint meetings and I am pleased to announce that PDG Douglas W. Vincent has agreed to attend on behalf of our District 7080.

Having a member involved with United Nations activities will enhance our knowledge of the UN process and provide a great public relations opportunity to promote Rotary's image. It also recognizes that leadership includes community leaders from each region of the world and member country, in addition to the government representatives.

Doug's leadership in International Service is well known. As a former Governor, member of various RI Committees and 25 year Rotarian, his travels abroad for Rotary activities have developed a deep awareness of Rotary and culture from a worldwide perspective. His global experience and participation in these discussions with other Rotary leaders will contribute to their success.

In the near future Doug will be traveling to New York City to attend Rotary Day at the United Nations meetings, then returning with a wealth of information and knowledge. I am sure he will be pleased to share this experience with clubs to help everyone better understand the partnership of Rotary and the United Nations in making the world a better place.

Rotary's involvement with the UN and the fact that we have official representatives in New York, can greatly enhance Rotary International and your club's public image in the community. It raises Rotary to a "world class" level when we are recognized at the United Nations, so I encourage you to promote and be proud of this high-level global recognition, which your organization maintains. In the near future, your District Public Relations Committee will be sending out some news releases regarding this.

On behalf of all Rotarians, I am pleased and confident that Doug is well qualified to handle this important role. I am sure we all look forward to learning more about this process and Rotary's United Nations involvement in building a successful future for our world.

Syd Harmon
D7080 Governor

PS - Since this report, Doug has also been appointed as Zone 22 (now 24) Rotary Representative for United Nations Assoc of Canada.
