Background
Children and patients with special health care needs (PSHCN) are two vulnerable groups of the world population. Providing dental services to these patients are challenging, requiring commitment, special equipment and often- additional behaviour management techniques including Nitrous Oxide Inhalation sedation. The need for dental treatment of children and PSCHN at UWC oral health centre is huge. South Africa has an extreme prevalence of early childhood caries and patients without medical aid. Many patients with medical aid also report to UWC as many medical aids do not cover dental treatment or sedation for children or PSHCN.
Establishing a dedicated “Pediatric and Special Health Care Needs Unit” will allow UWC to be able to provide 1st class service rendering to this vulnerable group of patients. The ideal is to establish such a unit at both sites, Tygerberg and Mitchells Plain in Cape Town, South Africa. Well-equipped and conducive working environments will have an impact on service delivery but also contribute to case- based research and clinical training.
Community Assessment
Feedback from the team at the Dental facility at Tygerberg Hospital shows that a current waiting list of over 6 months is currently being experienced, where paediatric patients, due to a lack of specialist care, have to undergo surgery under full anaesthetic to deal with dental problems.
There is no doubt that the facility will be fully utilized and additional facilities closer to patients’ homes will need to be established in the future.
