A Streetsville Interact Club Initiative
A school community is filled with individuals of all cultures, ages, values and interests. From teachers to students, it is extremely important to create an environment where everyone feels welcomed and celebrated. Luckily for the Streetsville Secondary community, the Interact club is the perfect place for just that.
Having been sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mississauga Streetsville for over a decade, Interact at Streetsville has become a perfect example of a hub that creates a common cause among its members by fundraising and hosting fun school events throughout the school year to support local and international charities.
This year was exceptionally busy as the club worked extra hard to organize numerous events such as:
Grade 9 Dodgeball Tournament, Valentine’s Day Skate Event, Krispy Kreme Donut Sales, Seniors vs. Teachers Dodgeball Tournament, Baked Goods Sales, Summer Carnival
and many more.
Part of the funds raised was directed towards Build Africa, an international organization that focuses on education to end poverty, while the remainder was used to create hygiene kits for a local charity called Our Place Peel, which they have supported for the past five years with the objective of helping struggling youth in our local community.
“With the funds raised, the club was able to build 50+ hygiene packages for the winter season, and with help from the Streetsville Rotary Club, we were able to add another 30 kits for the summer season.” Said Bharathithas & Safa Khan, Co-Presidents of the club for the 2022-2023 school year.
“Our Place Peel supports the most vulnerable young people in the Peel Region and when youths arrive at the shelter, employees like to welcome them with a personalized hygiene kit. The students at Streetsville Secondary feel connected to this program; firstly because we are young people living in Mississauga, and secondly because we have seen what some of our classmates go through and how they relied on the help of community services such as this to keep going.” They added.
In a single year, Interact at Streetsville was able to accomplish a lot and to bring a smile to members of the local community and overseas; and with the continuous support of Streetsville Rotary, both students and staff were able to experience an exceptional year filled with memorable events that gave them the opportunity to give back.
