Over the past five months, the Rotaract Club of Mississauga has been hosting bowling tournaments for Refugee Youth in their community on a bi-weekly basis.
On Wednesday, February 25, the Rotaract Club of Mississauga had the privilege of hosting a bowling tournament for youth refugees — and what unfolded was far more than an evening of recreation.
It was an evening of laughter.
It was connection.
It was belonging.
For many of the young people in attendance, this was their first time bowling. For some, it was shared that this was the best day they’ve had since arriving in Canada. In a season of transition and uncertainty, a simple bowling lane became a space where confidence was rebuilt, friendships were strengthened, and joy took center stage.
Over the past five months, the Rotaract Club of Mississauga has been engaging with these youth on a bi-weekly basis on site. Through consistent presence and relationship-building, we have learned that meaningful integration does not happen through isolated moments — it happens through community. It happens when young people feel seen, supported, and included.
While the evening was filled with strikes, spares, and friendly competition, the real impact went much deeper. Programs like this reduce isolation, support mental well-being, and help restore a sense of normalcy and dignity for youth navigating displacement. When we invest in young people early — especially those rebuilding their lives — the long-term return for our communities is exponential.
This event would not have been possible without strong collaboration across our Rotary family. We extend our sincere gratitude to our four Rotary clubs in Mississauga:

- The Rotary Club of Mississauga
- The Rotary Club of Mississauga West
- The Rotary Club of Streetsville
- The Rotary Club of Mississauga Meadowvale
Thank you for each sponsoring a team and making this evening possible.
We also extend special thanks to local Councillor and Rotarian Brad Butt for sponsoring a team, and to Past District Governor Rudy Habesch for bringing this opportunity forward and championing youth engagement.
When Rotary and Rotaract align around a shared purpose, we move beyond fragmented efforts and create real pathways to integration and success. This event exemplified Service Above Self in action — smart social investment, strong community building, and meaningful inclusion.
Sometimes, building stronger communities starts with a single bowling lane. And sometimes, it grows into something far greater.
We look forward to continuing this work and creating more opportunities for these young people to remember what they already are — valued, capable, and that they belong.
