Streetsville Rotary Club Donates $4,000 to Support Students at Ray Underhill Public School

 

The Streetsville Rotary Club recently donated $4,000 to Ray Underhill Public School in Mississauga, a K–5 school that supports many students from refugee and newcomer families. Originally, the donation was planned to fund a school field trip; however, when those plans fell through, the funds were redirected to purchase educational resources that would have a lasting impact on students’ learning and development.

 

Select members of the Streetsville Rotary Club attended a school meeting where these new resources were introduced to the teaching staff. The materials are research- and evidence-based, designed to support students in key areas such as reading, writing, speaking, vocabulary development, and phonics skills. Special attention was also given to selecting phonics tools for older learners who may still be developing literacy skills but are ready for more age-appropriate materials—avoiding the “See Spot Run” experience.

In addition to literacy tools, the school invested in social and emotional learning resources. These materials help students build skills in teamwork, group interaction, and social problem-solving, which are essential for classroom and community success.

Teachers expressed their enthusiasm as they explored the new resources, sharing comments such
as:

“This is something they struggle with.”
“The kids love these!”
“Get the kids excited about learning.”
“Rich, quality resources.”
“Simple tools, big, big impact.”

The donation has already begun to make a meaningful difference in the classroom, helping to create a more engaging and supportive learning environment for all students—especially those facing additional challenges as newcomers.

During the visit, the Rotary members and staff also discussed opportunities for future collaboration to continue supporting the education and well-being of students in the Streetsville community.
