Panel Discussion, February 24, 2025
In January 2021, Luisa Kraus, founder of Elora House, delivered a powerful presentation on the devastating effects of human trafficking to the Guelph South Rotary Club, leaving a lasting impact. Motivated by her insights, the club formed the "Educate to Eradicate Human Trafficking" committee, which has since grown stronger with the inclusion of passionate members from two other Guelph clubs.
Sex trafficking involves the recruitment and exploitation of individuals, often through coercion or deceit. In Ontario, certain populations are particularly vulnerable, including adolescents aged 14 to 24, who may be lured by false promises. Indigenous women and girls face heightened risks due to systemic issues such as poverty and marginalization. Other at-risk groups include individuals from low-income backgrounds, racialized communities, runaways, survivors of abuse, immigrants, people with substance use issues, LGBTQ+ youth, and those with mental health challenges.
Addressing these vulnerabilities requires a comprehensive approach that includes education, prevention, and support services. Community involvement and advocacy are essential in combating this critical issue, which is often underreported.
To further raise awareness, the committee is hosting an important information session on February 24th from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Salvation Army Citadel in Guelph. A panel of experts will discuss the local impact of human trafficking, particularly in the Guelph-Wellington region. Limited seating is available, and interested participants are encouraged to register by emailing ehtc.rotary@gmail.com .
